• To all you 'ARMY's that jumped to conclusions and immediately joined the antis' "hate train" of sweet Min Yoongi, I hope you learn from your mistake: don't spread misinformation about someone you supposedly "support" without *RESEARCHING.* It's one thing to doubt his character before you look into what he did "wrong" (that's reasonable to an _extent,_ as we do need to hold our idols' accountable *if* they mess up), but to publicly express your hate for Yoongi and join in with the antis' nearly successful slandering of his credibility and beliefs -- basically calling him a *racist* -- is disgusting. Your ignorance was shown, and I really do hope you learn from it. ARMY: if you still hold resentment towards Yoongi, then I think you need to question whether or not you're a true fan. To the antis' that are still trying to "cancel" Yoongi; get a f*cking life and reevaluate your morals if you get pleasure from ruining an innocent man's reputation, plus taking away the awareness for POC (#blacklivesmatter) that is going on Twitter. • I think he could’ve gotten his point across without digging for the speech. I think it’s best if there’s still some sort of explanation since everyone has different reasonings, none of which are directly from Yoongi, so it’s all just assumptions. I truly love Yoongi and respect him but I don’t see how you can defend him without hearing his response first. The evidence is there. Everyone knows what JJ did.. I don’t get how you are so quick to defend him, clear the searches, cover it up when most of you are silent about blm or you’re tweeting about blm at the same time as defending Yoongi...

    • That's exactly what I think, he could have made his argument without putind the audio and argument would still makes sense. I really like yoongi but I think that it's really disrespectful to use an audio of a mass murderer, and I he did it for aesthetic, there a millions of audios he could have used. He should totally talk about why he decided to put it in the song because I really think it's out of place. I'm kinda disappointed.

  • For those mad about the Jim Jones Yoongi scandal. Jim Jones is not only racist against blacks but also anti South Korean. The thing that I tell people is that this is a multiple meaning. Bts and many other groups do it all the time. The song not only is this a song hating on the haters but also against Jim Jones. Why do you think he would put Jim Jones sermón audio in the beginning? He did it to show that this song also is hate towards Jim Jones. Read and think about the lyrics of the song. Remember songs are poems. The whole song is about him dissing people and Yoongi wanted to focas on his haters and Jim Jones. Also hundreds of other artists use horrible peoples words in their song to show meaning to their song. Please enjoy this song and the meanings of this song.

  • Jim Jones was notoriously anti South Korea, "What do you think?" It is a song where it attacks indescribable enemies in the industry. It is a song in which he, a Korean person in a Korean group, boasts of his success and reflects on the dominance in Western spaces that attracted people like Jones. Follow "daechwita", a song where she prides herself on her Korean origins making use of Korean traditional history and cultural ideas. What do you think? "Is a song that addresses how people start rumors and speculation to tarnish BTS's good name and / or gain influence from it. What was Yoongi's purpose no one can exactly know for sure. I thought that , in the previous months, where tons of ARMYS, who had already listened to the sample, analyzed it and speculated what it would be used for, we would realize the complexity. Right now is a very difficult time. We are fighting to put our weight together to support the #BLM movement. This is really important; direct action against unjust states. Dissent manifestations. I can understand why people would be especially vulnerable to outrage. I can understand, also, why someone would consider the sample unpleasant, as they did with Andrés serrano piss christ or "DNA" by kendrick. But there is no rule that says art must be in good taste or it must be clear in its intentions. If you're posting right now outraged, be very honest with yourself and ask yourself how fast your reflex became by vaguely learning about the situation and aggressively tweeting about it. This is the same way as health advice for protesters with misinformation got more than 100k RT. Many people, especially on social media, do not realize that fighting for social justice requires a balance between knowing when to fight and when not to fight; when to speak and when to first learn the context, verify the information and wait. They just want blood - the sample was probably used to generate awkward reminders of what cult behavior, speculation, haste and mob mentality can do, as the song suggests. It is ironic that many of us have bitten the hook and actually demonstrated it in response. And it continues in a historic hip-hop tradition of testing the voices of people representing evil; who represents your opposition. (Credits to @DearBeyond)

  • Check this twitter thread by a black man twitter.com/TEARPNG/status/1266593696893394945. He explains it very well and clears up some misunderstandings. In the rap and hip-hop industry, it's very common for rappers to sample controversial speakers to MOCK AND CRITICIZE THEM. Jim Jones was anti-black BUT he was also ANTI-KOREAN. Yoongi, who is a korean, would never support someone like that. I'm ashamed that people would think he would actually do that. You all should understand that this song is HIGHLIGHTING HIS SUCCESS AS A KOREAN in western spaces. I agree that it would've been better if Yoongi didn't include that audio, but people shouldn't immediately jump on hate bandwagons and try to cancel him. People should wait for Yoongi or BigHit to make a public announcement. Yoongi is a good person, and I know for sure that THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO MALICIOUS INTENT BEHIND THIS.

  • Yoongi is a whole 28yo winner producer, he's very conscious. Why would y'all think he wasn't aware of what he produces? That just shows the way you think of your own idols, thinking they have no voice over their own words and are controlled by their company. The context and the lyrics are pretty clear, the sample was the introduction for his antithesis, it's not rly that hard to understand. He even said 'what do you think' was a trap for haters and he criticized the mentality y'all have acting like sheeps. That's why he also said 'D-2' was for +19 people, some of us actually have braincells.

  • PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOONGI WAS CRITICISING JIM JONES HERE, many artists have used the same speech Yoongi used in the beginning, I didn't even notice it when I first listened to the song cause it was muffled and quiet so im pretty impressed how people found it. anyway Jim Jones was an anti black and anti Korean, he was a cult leader responsible for killing nearly one thousand innocent people, mostly women and children, however he also tortured Koreans back then. in hip hop culture, artists putting speeches or words used by hated people is a form of art, telling you that the artist is against that person and what they have done, its a really popular thing. I understand very well how people can get emotional about it but he didn't say anything about standing with Jim Jones so I suggest its better if you just don't listen to the song. this song was directed to racist white people who criticise BTS on a daily, like when BTS attend western award shows people start being racist and making fun of them for not being able to speak English very well. this was pointed to them, he only used Jim Jones's speech for a few seconds at the start cause he was one of the many racist and horrible people in history. this song was aimed at racists where he's basically saying "look at me now, you criticised me all the time but look at me, what do you think of me now?" he only used Jim Jones as an example, if he didn't use Jim Jones how would you know Yoongi was aiming this song to racist people? it could've just been a song to the haters, but he went in for the depth, no matter what this does not give you a right to cancel Yoongi. if you're not mad at him and you're ok but you just want a statement from him then that's okay, even though to me I don't need a statement because what he did wasn't wrong but I understand why people would get emotional and I respect that, however if you are mad at him and you're ready to cancel him if he didn't give u an apology then leave and never come back. an anti started spreading lies and wrong info, their @ is pink_romantics and many joined her because Kpop Stans love to cancel BTS over small things, I also heard thepophub was against bts now idk about that just saw a tweet, anyway, don't take it to heart please.

Trend the same hashtags for them as well. Again, yoongi is using the perspective of a South Korean. This guy has history with yoongi's country, and yoongi using this means he's mocking him, since we all are aware Yoongi is very vocal about his own nationality. • why do i feel like people are overreacting? i get that some would feel uncomfortable, Jim Jones is a disgusting pig but he's also a part of popular culture not because he's idolized for what he did or anything, it's because it was a weird case (bh, post malone and lil uzi referenced him). When western artists use controversial references it's a statement, it's just irony or satire but when it's an Asian it's suddenly the most insensitive shit we've ever seen? alright lol The same people criticizing yoongi for using the sermon are the ones who were going crazy over Agust D being a genocidal, egocentric king on daechwita... if it's just him mimicking/playing a character, isn't that a metaphor? from my point of view (this is just MY perspective) the sample gave a direction to the song - it's about a egomaniac side, something that isn't min yoongi - it gives the impression that he's at the top of the world but it's bs. Jim was a weirdo, he collected followers, treated them like a family just to build an empire, brainwashed them and then all of them died including himself. He was a drug addict, a psychopath who was also very political. I've watched documentaries and he believed every lie he said. I see people trying to paint Jonestown (a >mixed< cult) as a racial/anti black crime and that's honestly so pretentious and stupid (i see why yall doing it now), Jim was a psychopath. Not Hitler, not a KKK leader. He killed the poor people who thought his words were the answer, not because of their race or background, that's what every cult/church does minus the mass suicide/murder. Watch the interviews his sons gave, his "family" was big and multi racial. i just want an explanation from yoongi, if he used it just as an aesthetic then the song shouldn't even be out but if there's a meaning behind the sample I'll personally be ok with it.

  • READ *EVERYTHING* BEFORE YOU COMMENT To add to this conversation: Yoongi is only credited for writing the lyrics. El Capitxn and Ghstloop are credited with the production of the song - he is not. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t be held accountable and educated, because it’s a terrible thing that this was included in the final project anyway, but he didn’t intentionally put the sample in there himself. I hope that with all the emails BigHit is receiving, he’ll apologize and take responsibility as well as fix the song. Now I know that people are mentioning that he talked about the song or something a few years ago in their documentary but I have yet to look into that and see what he meant, or if it’s even true. But guys, please, cancel culture is so incredibly toxic and just keep in mind that you need to find as many facts about the situation as you can before declaring someone as cancelled. An audio file of the original speech (the part used in the sample starts at 43:35): www-rohan.sdsu.edu/nas/streaming/dept/scuastaf/collections/peoplestemple/MP3/Q987.MP3 (credits to another comment that I couldn’t find again :/) Credits to TrashyPotato 998 for more sources on the situation twitter.com/elliotsang/status/1266562389903843331 jonestown.sdsu.edu/?page_id=80857 mobile.twitter.com/tearpng/status/1266593696893394945. Update: So after doing some research, here’s what I’ve gathered. I think that Yoongi did intend to use the controversial clip in the beginning to diss Jim Jones and people like him (Jim Jones was anti-Korean and killed his adoptive Korean-American children), or to warn against hive mind mentality (people who will blindly hate him for anything he does the way Jim Jones followers blindly followed him). Many rappers use controversial clips in their songs to attack or go against what it being said in the clip. Many other bigger artists have used this same clip and have not been attacked for it. Jim Jones called his family a “rainbow family” because he had white, black, Asian, and Native American children. Despite being incredibly racist, Jim Jones took these children under his care, perhaps to show that, as a big cult leader, his message of “no race, no barriers” was legitimate, when in fact, the majority of the people who suffered because of him were black. However, out of all of his children, only his black son, Jim Jones Jr., survived. The song criticizes the media who try and use BTS’s name for clicks and attention, which could mean that he knows most of these bigger platforms or artists aren’t genuine about their interest in them and only want them there for popularity (ex: The Grammys). The sample starts right after Deachwita, a song which is very heavily influenced by Korean culture, sonically and in terms of pop culture references. The song repeats “What do you think?” over and over again in a mocking way to show that he doesn’t care what people think of him, perhaps based on his race since many people won’t even give him and his music a chance due to the language barrier. Putting a sample of an anti-Korean man right after a song that is heavily Korean is clearly ironic. So, while I do see the possible intent of the sample, I think that the mark was missed. Or, alternatively, I think that it’s just unfortunate timing - this song has been out for a week, with snippets of it having been heard almost two years ago, but no one said anything. I don’t think it’s because people didn’t want to hold him accountable, I just think that because of what’s been going on recently with George Floyd, more people are angry about anything that has to do with going against black people, without knowing that there was another layer to the discrimination that applied to people like him as well. Which begs the question - if it weren’t for the George Floyd situation, how many of us would’ve cared, or thought differently of it? Would it have been easier to see the artistic intent of the clip instead of jumping to conclusions? Was it simply used to stir controversy to see how people would react? Whatever the case, I want to wait for a statement from Yoongi or BigHit, even if his intentions weren’t as ill-willful as people are making them out to be. Do I think Yoongi is racist? No. Do I think he agrees with Jim Jones and what he stood for? No - quite the opposite actually. Do I think he may have not fully thought out the implications of the clip? Maybe - most likely. He should address what’s going on and I’ll wait until that happens. Whatever the case, if all of you care as much as you say about racism, please put your energy where it matters most. How easy would it have been for us to trend BLM over Jim Jones?

In the rap and hip-hop industry, it's very common for rappers to sample controversial speakers to MOCK AND CRITICIZE THEM. Jim Jones was anti-black BUT he was also ANTI-KOREAN. Yoongi, who is a korean, would never support someone like that. I'm ashamed that people would think he would actually do that. You all should understand that this song is HIGHLIGHTING HIS SUCCESS AS A KOREAN in western spaces. I agree that it would've been better if Yoongi didn't include that audio clip, but people shouldn't immediately jump on hate bandwagons and try to cancel him. People should wait for Yoongi or BigHit to make a public announcement. Yoongi is a good person, and I know for sure that THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO MALICIOUS INTENT BEHIND THIS.

  • Jim Jones was highly anti-Korean as well as anti-black and an all around terrible person. He was also an american. "What do you think" is a song highlighting his success as a korean, especially in western spaces (america). Not only is the inclusion of the sample CRITICIZING it, but the rest of the song indirectly mocks the fact that westerners think less of foreign and non-white artists by stating a rhetorical question of "what do you think?", as in "what do you [a westerner/hater/racist] think [of me,the very thing you wrongly criticize, making it and doing what you thought I couldn't do?]" The inclusion of the sample is him comparing racist westerners to jim jones. This has ALWAYS been a thing in rap. Rappers will sample a speech as a segue into th topic they're criticizing. Fr exmple, look at Joyner Lucas and Logic's song, 'Isis'. Before each of their verses, there's a sample of The American Psychiatric Association’s definition of ADHD. The way the sample is premised, right after, it's basically criticizing how society wrongly stereotypes and stigmatizes mental health. A rapper, or really any other artist, using a sample in their song does not necessarily mean that they support the speaker in the sample Context means EVERYTHING when it comes to sampling speeches or statements. It always helps to read the lyrics that follow the sample as well as knowing the history behind the speaker, like knowing that Jim Jones was highly anti-Korean. Many rappers have sampled Jim Jones, mainly black ones, to criticize both the speech and as well as society since the things that man believed in and preached are still real issues that POC have to face TO THIS DAY.

  • To ppl who are currently canceling Yoongi bc he sampled a Jim Jones' sermon: Option 1.: he used it for aesthetical reasons and didn't educate himself about the background of Jim Jones. Option 2.: he used it bc to him it resembles haters and people who seek attention by acting up. Option 3, 4, 5, etc etc (aka there could be MANY more reasons) Before anyone jumps to conclusions and is so certain about option 1, how about we just wait until he makes a statement, instead of throwing him under the bus immediately? Mob mentality is digusting. Cancel culture is disgusting. Jumping to conclusions and treating them as facts is disgusting. This not only applies to the situation with Yoongi, but also many more artists. Also, why are ppl so eager to create a scandal, when you should just wait for answers and could sign a petition for BLM instead?

    • @Sad Beans I said it in another comment but I'll say it again.J J is representing the haters. He died but the hate is still here, the racism, discrimination and crimes. The corelation between J J and the haters is valid because they are indeed killers for out mentality. Not to mention that a lot of people comitted suicide because of the hate comments as they said in the song "UGH". When I heard the begining of the song I believed it was the haters who bashes BTS.After that, when I realised it was J J speaking everything was clear for me.J J was a racist who killed many people and a lot of the hate BTS receives is because of the racism too. That's why he ask the question"What do you think?" regarding his achievements, because the haters tried to kill him but they couldn't, they tried to stop his succes but they failed. It is funny for me how everyone jumped to conclusions without actually researching propperly or how they thought that Yoongi supports J J . This situation just proved me that this superficial society will never change and it's really sad. Watch this for more explanation mobile.twitter.com/TEARPNG/status/1266593696893394945

  • WORMS FOR BRAINS edit: IM TALKING ABT ALL YALL WHO TURNED ON YOONGI INSTANTLY. Heres my take on this (at the end i linked a thread a BLACK MAN wrotr explaining more): the beginning, the distorted words is a sample from a sermon of a man named Jims Jone, a cult leader who had over 900 people commit suicide by drinking poison. I personally dont see an issue considering a ton of artists have also sampled jims jone (lana del rey, post malone, kendrick lamar, etc) and hes using it ironically, criticizing and degrading the mans beliefs (bc jims jone was also anti-korean) ig dark music themes just isnt expected from people under the k-industry. Here is a twitter thread explaining more how yoongi used the sample twitter.com/TEARPNG/status/1266593696893394945?s=19

  • Lmao y’all my man Yoongi DISSED JJ. It wasn’t for ~aesthetic~ reasons or some shit. Y’all just being snowflakes. Why tf would Yoongi support someone who was ANTI South Korea?! Besides many western artists have sampled Jim Jones before. Stay pressed 🤦‍♀️🖕

    • @Stray Kids Check this twitter thread by a black man twitter.com/TEARPNG/status/1266593696893394945.

    • @Stray Kids And regarding your question "Where does Suga diss J J?" . The fact that Suga uses J J speach at the begining and immediately after that he ask "What do you think" followed by telling his achievements is where the diss thing happens.J J is the impersonation haters. He died but the hate is still here, the racism, discrimination and crimes. The corelation between J J and the haters is valid because they are indeed killers for our mentality. Not to mention that a lot of people comitted suicide because of the hate comments. When I heard the begining of the song I believed it was the haters who bashes BTS.After that, when I realised it was J J speaking everything was clear for me.J J was a racist who killed many people and a lot of the hate BTS and other people receive is because of the racism too. That's why he ask the question"What do you think?" regarding his achievements, because the haters tried to kill him mentally, as J J tried to kill so many persons and succeded, but in Suga's case they couldn't, they tried to stop his succes but they failed.

    • @Stray Kids And after J J died did the racism dissapear, did the hate vanish? A few days ago a man was killed because of racism. We all try to ignore the sensitive topics but Yoongi just remember us that anothers small J J are still in this world, the haters who killed many people mentally or even phisically. That's where we fail as nation, we try to ignore or forget the dark things instead of trying to repair our history.

    • Feer Speciar Suga DID not have to use JJ’s speech to prove a point to haters, he’s “smart” he could’ve gone another route, also, JJ being anti korean doesn’t erase the fact he KILLED mostly black people. Which is still insensitive whether suga used it for the anti korean part or not because JJ is known for that. “Y’all just being snowflakes” you’re basically invalidating people who are uncomfortable about the fact the beginning of the song english voice’s is a MURDERER.

      Stray KidsStray Kids4 ਘੰਟੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
  • TL;DR: think before you get offended. 1. Jim Jones was anti Korean. Yoongi does not support him. 2. the orginal sample: “though you are dead, yet you shall live, and he that liveth and believeth shall never die, faithful workers coming in night after night, giving me their heart, giving me the spirit of socialism” 3. He comments on haters who have a cult mentality around him. They don’t think for themselves and penalize him for his success and improvement.
